Smart Bits: New College Category at Smart Card Forum

The Smart Card Forum said it has created a membership category for colleges and universities.

The University of Michigan, which has a 100,000-card campus program, has been a member of the forum since early last year and will be in the new education category.

The University of Illinois recently joined the forum and is planning to convert its card program to smart cards to provide more applications and better security.

"Some of our corporate members are involved in more than 25 campus card programs in the U.S. and Canada," said Donna Farmer, president and chief executive officer of the forum. "This kind of cross-sector cooperation is what the forum is all about, and these partnerships are resulting in a fast-increasing number of successful implementations."
