Smart Bits: Gemplus Says Tool Kit Gave Belgian Firm Edge

Gemplus said Mobistar, a Belgian wireless telephone company, has achieved a breakthrough in smart card system development using GemXplore technology.

With the Gemplus tool kit for SIMs-the chip-based subscriber identity modules embedded in GSM-standard phones-Mobistar developed a service in- house in a matter of days, the smart card vendor said.

That resulted in "a huge competitive advantage," said Martin Willems, value-added services project manager at Mobistar. "Our new service, pronto box, offers a SIM Toolkit-compatible phone and SIM card giving access to information services, reminders, and billing information. It is the first of many services Mobistar will be developing using GemXplore CASE," or computer-aided SIM engineering.

Gemplus said Mobistar is the first of more than 100 companies with GemXplore CASE kits to launch such a service commercially.
