In Brief: Merrill Private-Client Leader to Step Down

J. Arthur Urciuoli, who has helped lead Merrill Lynch & Co.'s international private client retail business since 1997, will resign at the end of the quarter, the firm said Wednesday.

Mr. Urciuoli, 62, has worked at the brokerage for 30 years. Since 1997 he has worked on overseas expansion initiatives, including the launch last year of Merrill Lynch Japan Securities and the acquisition of London-based Mercury Asset Management, serving as an "ambassador" of the brokerage, a spokeswoman said. He reported to executive vice president Winthrop H. Smith Jr., the head of the international private client group. Mr. Urciuoli's responsibilities will be absorbed by other managers in the group.
