Tech Bytes: Calif. Firm's Network Terminals to Barclays

Network Computing Devices Inc. said its orders from Barclays Bank indicate that the London-based institution is furthering its commitment to thin-client computing.

The vendor, known as NCD, said Barclays has ordered the 20,000th NCD terminal for its Unix-based branch network. The bank is also testing the company's latest product family, the Thinstar 200 for the Windows operating system.

These devices meet the definition of network computers in that they rely heavily on remote, "thick servers" for data base access and computation.

"Barclays is very similar to the majority of larger technology users now looking at thin-client solutions, especially since Microsoft launched Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition," said David Perry, NCD's director of sales for the United Kingdom. "They are fully aware that personal computers are not the most cost-effective desktop choice."
