In Brief: Some Mellon Branches To Be Open on Jan. 1

Attempting to deal with consumers' fears that they will lose access to their money because of the year-2000 problem, Mellon Bank Corp. said it would open some of its branches on Saturday, Jan. 1, and Sunday, Jan. 2, which would normally be holidays.

The number of branches will be determined in December, the company said. They would include "key" locations throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey.

The company said it will also extend banking hours at all locations later than normal Friday, Dec. 31.
