Cards Briefs: Hypercom Hires Exec For Multilane Division

Hypercom Corp. has hired point of sale industry veteran Roger Hitchcock to be vice president and general manager of the multilane division, a move the company said reflects a stronger commitment to large national retailers, chain drug stores, and supermarkets.

Having introduced its Interactive Consumer Environment terminals and Ascendent software, Hypercom hired "a proven innovator with excellent experience in the multilane marketplace," said Hypercom president Albert Irato.

"The multilane environment is at the forefront" of the movement toward "new payment schemes and technologies such as smart cards and loyalty programs," Mr. Hitchcock said. "Hypercom is in a unique position to quickly deliver a complete multilane systems solution (that) is more interactive, while being smart-card-ready."

Mr. Hitchcock was previously senior vice president of sales and marketing at IVI Checkmate. Before that he was a general manager of Verifone Inc.'s retail business unit, which he helped establish as a leading supplier to supermarkets.

Separately, Hypercom announced the appointment of Jock Patton to its board of directors. He fills a vacancy resulting from the resignation last year of former American Express and MasterCard executive John C. Elliott.

Mr. Patton, 51, after 20 years at the Streich Lang law firm, was president of StockVal Inc., a vendor of securities analysis software and proprietary data to mutual funds, major money managers, and brokerage firms, from 1992 to 1997.

He is also a director of communications software vendor Artisoft Inc.
