In Brief: Metris CEO to Head MasterCard U.S. Board

MasterCard International said Ronald N. Zebeck has been elected chairman of its U.S. regional board.

Mr. Zebeck, president and chief executive officer of subprime card issuer Metris Cos. in St. Louis Park, Minn., succeeds Stephen E. Wall, who is retiring as an executive vice president of KeyCorp.

Mr. Zebeck called it a "bold" move by MasterCard to select a chairman from a nontraditional lender. Other companies represented on MasterCard's board include MBNA Corp., Capital One Financial Corp., and Providian Financial Corp.

Mr. Zebeck has been a U.S. MasterCard director for three years. He was also reelected to MasterCard's global board, of which he has been a member since 1997.

During his tenure as chairman, Mr. Zebeck said, he expects MasterCard to make decisions more quickly and to become "the more dominant" card brand.
