In Brief: U.S. Bancorp Melds West, Central Region

U.S. Bancorp said it has combined its western and central commercial banking regions into one unit.

The consolidation, which took place in February, continues the melding of U.S. Bancorp and First Bank System. First Bank acquired U.S. Bancorp of Portland, Ore., in 1997 and took its name. The merged company is based in Minneapolis.

Gary T. Duim, the vice chairman formerly in charge of the six-state western region, and Richard A. Zona, the vice chairman who oversaw the 11- state central commercial region, are leading the combined unit.

Mr. Duim is scheduled to retire in August 2000, whereupon Mr. Zona is to take charge of all of U.S. Bancorp's commercial banking operations. Mr. Duim's departure would reduce to three the vice chairmen at the $76.4 billion-asset bank.

Vice chairman Robert D. Sznewajs will continue to oversee retail banking while Philip G. Heasley, also a vice chairman, will remain in charge of payment systems, credit cards, technology, and product development, the bank said.
