Charter One Bank Appoints Three Regional Retail Presidents

Cleveland-based Charter One Bank has named three men-including a senior KeyBank executive-as presidents of regional retail banking divisions.

Gary A. Vaccaro was promoted to the presidency of the $24 billion-asset bank's Ohio division, which has 88 branches in northeastern Ohio.

Mr. Vaccaro had been president of its constituent eastern Ohio district since 1996.

He joined the bank, a Charter One Financial subsidiary, in 1992, when it bought Canton, Ohio-based First American Savings Bank.

Mr. Vaccaro had been an executive vice president at that bank; Charter One made him president of its Canton division.

KeyBank executive Robert M. Curley was hired as president of Charter One's the Albank retail banking division, which has 86 branches in New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. The division, based in Albany, N.Y., was formed from Albank Financial Corp., which Charter One bought in November.

Mr. Curley was the retail banking executive for KeyBank's eastern United States region, which has operations from western New York to Maine.

(KeyBank has named Michael McNamara, its Maine district president, to succeed him on an interim basis.)

Mr. Curley started his banking career in 1968 as an executive trainee with Franklin National Bank in Franklin Square, N.Y., on Long Island. In 1972 he joined Marine Midland Bank in Melville, N.Y., as a commercial lending officer and branch manager.

In 1976 he went to the old Key Bank, which was then based in Albany. By 1991 he was a regional president and a vice chairman of Key Bank of New York State. In 1994, when KeyCorp merged with Society Corp. of Cleveland, he was named a KeyBank vice chairman.

(Albank Financial's former chairman, Herbert Chorbajian, is now a vice chairman of Charter One Financial. Mr. Chorbajian, who was also Albank's president and chief executive officer, is responsible for strategies and acquisitions.)

Dennis A. Kelley, a senior vice president of Household Bank in Chicago, was hired to succeed Mr. Vaccaro as president of Charter One's eastern Ohio division.

Mr. Kelley will be based in Canton and oversee 31 branches there and in Akron, Youngstown, Girard, New Philadelphia, and Austintown. He will report to Mr. Vaccaro.
