Card Briefs: Boston's USTrust Plans 100-ATM Expansion

UST Corp. plans to install more than 100 automated teller machines in Massachusetts convenience stores, nearly doubling its ATM network in the state.

Timothy J. Hansberry, president and chief operating officer of UST's bank subsidiary, USTrust, said this week that the company will place machines beginning next month in stores of two convenience store chains.

About 80 ATMs are to be sited in eastern Massachusetts, the rest in the central and western parts of the state, where USTrust has little presence.

The machines will dispense cash but will not accept deposits. The names of the convenience stores will be announced in two weeks, Mr. Hansberry said.

Boston-based USTrust has been looking to expand its ATM network since last fall, when the state's two largest banking companies-Fleet Financial Group and BankBoston Corp.-began charging noncustomers extra for ATM transactions. With more ATMs to choose from, USTrust customers "can avoid bumping into surcharges," Mr. Hansberry said.

UST, with $5.9 billion of assets, is the fifth-largest banking company in Massachusetts. It operates 88 branches and 115 ATMs, mostly in the Boston area.
