Hewlett-Packard Co. has moved to make electronic mail more secure by integrating its OpenMail program with the VirtualVault software that many Internet banks rely on.
The combination, available with a new version of OpenMail demonstrated in late March, is designed to give remote employees access to e-mail from any device via a standard Web browser.
There would be no need to carry a laptop computer specifically for e- mail, or to rely on dial-up connections.
"OpenMail has always been recognized for its lowest 'total cost of ownership,'" said Nigel Upton, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's communications software operation. "By extending OpenMail environments with VirtualVault, organizations can greatly reduce the complexity and costs of operating remote e-mail."
