Manatt, Phelps & Phillips Names Executive

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, a Los Angeles-based law and consulting firm, said Paul H. Irving will succeed Gordon M. Bava as chief executive next Jan. 1.

Mr. Irving, 46, will also be promoted from partner to a managing partnership. He is chairman of the firm's financial services group, a partner in charge of client services, and a member of the management, compensation, and recruiting committees.

Mr. Bava, 51, will become co-chairman, along with the current chairman, Charles T. Manatt. Mr. Bava, a managing partner for 10 years, will relinquish day-to-day management and return to full-time law practice.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips provides counsel for capital markets activities, compliance, and operations, as well as commercial, consumer, and real estate finance. Its banking clients include First Union, Comerica Bank, Union Bank of California, Citibank FSB, Bay View Capital Corp., East- West Bank, and Guaranty Federal Bank, the 135-branch thrift subsidiary of Temple-Inland Inc.
