More than 10,000 people are expected to attend next month's installment of Cardtech/Securtech, the smart card industry's largest conference and exhibition.

The event will take place May 11-14 at McCormick Place South in Chicago.

Besides smart cards, the subjects of more than 200 presentations will include biometric identification and data encryption. More than 1,000 exhibit booths have been bought up.

For the first time, the conference will include hands-on workshops for application programmers and developers in the Microsoft Windows, Java Card, or Multos operating systems.

Several symposiums and workshops on May 14 will be held on such topics as "Foundations in Card Technology" and "Changing the Face of Money." Science journalist James Burke will deliver the keynote speech on May 12.
