In Brief: Check Printer Merging Five Units into One

Deluxe Corp. said Thursday it would combine five business units with high growth potential into a new operating unit called eFunds Corp.

The realignment is aimed at positioning the 84-year-old company, which still earns most of its revenue from printing checks, to take advantage of opportunities in electronic commerce.

The unit will combine Deluxe's electronic payment processing business, debit bureau, check authorization network, check conversion business, and a service that verifies the identities of loan and account applicants.

Deluxe said it would group its remaining businesses into three other operating units: Deluxe Paper Payment Systems, its check printing business; Government Services, for electronic benefits transfer services; and a still-unnamed outsourcing business.
