In Brief: Texas Bank Companies In $34M Merger Deal

Texas Regional Bancshares in McAllen said it is has a preliminary agreement to buy Harlingen Bancshares for $34 million in cash.

The purchase would make Texas Regional second in Cameron County deposits and strengthen its top position in the Rio Grande Valley, the company said.

Harlingen, based in the Texas city of that name, owns Harlingen National Bank; it has $226 million of assets and six branches. Texas Regional owns Texas State Bank, which has $1.8 billion of assets and 20 branches.

The acquisition is subject to the signing of a definitive agreement. The deal, announced last week, is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
