Tech Bytes: Keyware Buys a Belgian Biometrics Firm

Keyware Technologies Inc. said it has bolstered its biometrics business with the acquisition of IDtech, a Belgian company that specializes in access control systems, time recording, and badge identification.

Keyware, a subsidiary of Keyware Technologies NV, also of Belgium, said the acquisition, for undisclosed terms, is a first step in an aggressive growth strategy. Keyware offers Layered Biometric Verification, an approach that accommodates any type of biometric identifier, including voices, faces, and fingerprints.

IDtech has a global customer base that includes National Bank of Malaysia and Petroleum Authorities of Thailand.

Jean-Marie Hannaby, who will continue as IDtech chief executive officer, said Keyware will allow it to broaden its product line. "An important benefit is access to the U.S. market," he added.

Keyware CEO Francis Declercq, who was designated chairman of IDtech, said "the experience acquired by IDtech in the security sector coupled with our own cutting-edge technology will open up important opportunities in product development."
