Tech Bytes: Northern Trust to Use Hitachi Data Storage

Hitachi Data Systems said it has been chosen by Northern Trust Corp. of Chicago to deliver a storage area network, or SAN, for the banking company's corporate data center.

Northern Trust is installing elements of the Hitachi Data Systems Freedom SAN Solution, which is marketed to large corporations and is said to be the first system of its kind based on nonproprietary technology.

Northern Trust plansto use the data management technology in storage consolidation, off-loading of traffic from its local area network, and remote mirroring.

Benefits of the SAN "include the ability to pool storage devices in a central location, utilize a common automated tape library to back up multiple server locations, and off-load data management traffic from the LAN," said Randy Overbey, senior vice president, worldwide technology services for Northern Trust.
