NEW ENGLAND

Boston-based Fleet Financial Group has promoted senior vice president John F. Wood Jr., the market manager for three Connecticut counties in its private clients group, to executive vice president.

Mr. Wood is based in Greenwich, Conn. He had similar responsibilities for the counties-Fairfield, New Haven, and New London-at Shawmut Bank, which Fleet bought in 1995.

He came to Shawmut in 1988 when it bought Connecticut National Bank. Mr. Wood wound up as a member of Shawmut's management committee.

Fleet also promoted vice president Samuel W. Childs, the group's top executive for the Hartford area, to senior vice president, and hired Len Braudis at that rank as Boston-region manager.

Mr. Childs has been responsible for the Hartford area since 1993, when he joined Shawmut. Before that he was vice president of pension and financial services at Aetna Capital Management.

Mr. Braudis managed Fidelity Investments' Garden City, N.Y., branch as a vice president. He joined Fidelity in 1993 from Merrill Lynch in Boston, where he was a financial consultant.
