Smart Bits: Gemplus Event Invites Smart Card Inventors

In its latest attempt to stimulate development of Internet-related and other advanced smart card systems, Gemplus said it will hold a conference for system developers June 21-22 in the CNIT conference center in Paris.

Billed as the first worldwide gathering of its kind in the smart card industry, Gemplus Developer Conference '99 grew out of the Internet Developers Program that the chip card maker launched last October.

The stated objective is to encourage the exchange of scientific and technological information among smart card application developers.

"Gemplus believes that with this conference, we are providing the worldwide developers community with the event they are looking for," said chief executive officer Daniel Le Gal.

The response to the Internet Developer Program indicated that "the smart card market is very active" and "players look to Gemplus to provide the leadership in coordinating and disseminating information on smart card developments. We look forward to strengthening this role through this conference and other initiatives to be announced later this year."
