In Brief: First Union Chooses AOL, Sun Software

First Union Corp. said it will use Internet software from Sun Microsystems Inc. and America Online Inc. to develop cash management services.

America Online Inc., which bought Netscape Communications Corp. last year, and Sun formed an alliance in November 1998 to develop technologies that would help accelerate the adoption of Internet-based electronic commerce.

The banking company said it will use Netscape's Web and application servers. It plans to develop Internet-based bill payment and presentment services and wholesale lockbox imaging products that it will make available in the third quarter.

Cash management products delivered through the alliance's technology would simplify on-line cash management services for First Union's corporate customers, said Sandi Larsen, vice president and Internet development manager for the company's global cash management business. It also would shorten the time it takes to develop and distribute services, she said.
