Short Takes: Union Planters to Double Its Series 7 Staff

The brokerage arm of Memphis-based Union Planters Corp. said it plans to add 65 series 7 brokers by yearend, bringing its total to 135.

"Union Planters has had a lot of acquisitions in 1998, and in 1999 we are making sure that those acquisitions are all working together," said Jim Arnold, the president and chief executive of Union Planters Financial Services, which includes the brokerage arm.

Union Planters, which has $32 billion of assets, also has about 300 series 6 brokers, Mr. Arnold said.

Series 6 brokers are certified to sell packaged products such as mutual funds and annuities; series 7 brokers can also sell individual securities.

Separately, Union Planters' Nashville-based third-party marketing arm has added two fixed annuities to its Eagle Series. PFIC Corp.'s first proprietary fixed annuity was introduced in January. The firm provides investment products and services to about 80 banks.
