In Brief: Wider Powers for Futures Panel Opposed

Banking and securities regulators urged lawmakers Tuesday not to broaden the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's jurisdiction over swaps and other over-the-counter derivatives.

Granting authority to the CFTC could lead to confusion in the marketplace, Gary Gensler, Treasury under secretary for domestic finance, told the risk management subcommittee of the House agriculture committee.

Current law gives authority to the banking agencies and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
