In Brief: People's Names Long time Exec President

People's Bank named a new president Thursday, electing longtime executive John A. Klein to succeed the retiring David E.A. Carson.

Mr. Klein, 50, will also become chief executive officer on Oct. 1 and chairman on Jan. 1, 2000. Mr. Carson, who has built People's into Connecticut's largest bank with $12 bilion of assets, has held all three posts since 1984.

Mr. Klein has held a variety of management positions since joining People's in 1971, including general counsel and senioer vice president of consumer banking. Most recently he was head of of the bank's national and international credit card division.
