PayPal Inc. expects to generate new sources of business when it introduces its open development platform in November, executives said Thursday.

The goal is to give developers "access to a secure, global, plug-and-play payment solution which can be embedded in whatever you want to do," said Scott Thompson, the president PayPal, the San Jose payments unit of eBay Inc., during a Webcast.

For instance, the platform would give more merchants the ability to accept payments on Internet-connected devices without having to use a Web browser. The BlackBerry application store, where handset maker Research In Motion Ltd. routes all payments through PayPal, is using the platform that way already, he said.
