Visa Inc. said it has hired an executive from the GSM Association, a trade group for wireless telecommunications, to lead its mobile payments efforts.

Bill Gajda, the GSMA's chief commercial officer, will join Visa as head of mobile. In that role, he will work with companies in the wireless and financial services industries worldwide.

Gajda has been with the GSMA for seven years and in the wireless industry for 15 years.

"Bill's experience in working with mobile network operators, handset manufacturers and other leaders in wireless, combined with his track record in helping to developing successful business models, will be a significant asset," Elizabeth Buse, Visa's global head of product, said in a press release Monday.
