Hampden Bancorp Inc. in Springfield, Mass., has promoted its business banking executive to become president and chief operating officer.

The $555.3 million-asset company said late Wednesday that Glenn S. Welch will take on those positions at both the holding company and its Hampden Bank, effective Jan. 1.

Welch, 49, succeeds Thomas R. Burton as president. Burton, who served as president for 17 years, will remain the company's vice chairman and chief executive.

Welch joined Hampden in 1998 and was most recently served as an executive vice president and the division executive of business banking. He also had worked in commercial loans for four years.
