Mitek Plans Driver's License Authentication, Mobile Pay Software

Mitek Systems (MITK) is planning on selling the mobile imaging software it already licenses to Progressive — which allows the auto insurer's customers to take pictures of their driver's license and documents — to other parties.

The San Diego, Calif. technology company is already talking to several of the top banks, says chief executive Jim DeBello. He says those banks could use the product for mobile commerce, enabling users to authenticate when initially signing up for a digital wallet.

"Progressive is a real case study, people are getting quotations within a minute," says DeBello, who is speaking this week at the The 20th Annual ATM, Debit & Prepaid Forum. "The second step for us is to look at it for identification."

The challenge comes in correctly recognizing the roughly 197 driver's license formats that are used throughout the U.S. "It would be for mobile transactions," says DeBello. "It would be at the initial enrollment, or when you are conducting a transaction."

Of course, the number of times you would need to scan your driver's license with a smartphone would be up to the issuing bank, he says.
