Banks have been loath to cede any ground to carriers and handset makers in designing mobile wallets, so it seems out of character for JPMorgan Chase and Capital One to support Isis, the carrier-controlled entrant in the mobile payments race.

The carrier mobile payment venture Isis said Monday that it is working with several major payment system providers to allow merchants to accept its system at the point of sale.
Isis, a joint venture of AT&T Inc., T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, is working with VeriFone Systems Inc., Ingenico SA, Vivotech Inc. and Equinox Payments LLC (formerly Hypercom's U.S. business).
This collaboration will ensure that terminals deployed in the future will have the ability to accept Isis payments using phones with embedded near-field communication chips.
This collaboration is "an important step in enabling NFC technology adoption throughout the mobile commerce industry," said Scott Mulloy, Isis' chief technology officer, in a press release. "It also validates the open platform approach being offered by Isis."

Initially, customers of those three issuers will be able to the app with an NFC-equipped phone in pilot programs in Austin and Salt Lake City.
