Isis Working with Payment Tech Cos. on Mobile Wallet Acceptance

The carrier mobile payment venture Isis said Monday that it is working with several major payment system providers to allow merchants to accept its system at the point of sale.

Isis, a joint venture of AT&T Inc., T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, is working with VeriFone Systems Inc., Ingenico SA, Vivotech Inc. and Equinox Payments LLC (formerly Hypercom's U.S. business).

This collaboration will ensure that terminals deployed in the future will have the ability to accept Isis payments using phones with embedded near-field communication chips.

This collaboration is "an important step in enabling NFC technology adoption throughout the mobile commerce industry," said Scott Mulloy, Isis' chief technology officer, in a press release. "It also validates the open platform approach being offered by Isis."

Just last week, Isis also announced that by the middle of the year, customers of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Capital One Financial Corp. will be able to load their cards onto the Isis smartphone app. Isis had earlier announced a partership with Barclays PLC.

Initially, customers of those three issuers will be able to the app with an NFC-equipped phone in pilot programs in Austin and Salt Lake City.

"As a global payment terminal manufacturer, we welcome Isis' open approach of mobile commerce to engage with as many stakeholders of the payments ecosystem as possible," said Thierry Denis, Ingenico's president for North America, in a press release.
