MasterCard (MA) plans to launch PayPass Wallet Services later this year to enable bank and merchant customers to allow purchases in stores or online by paying with a tap of a smartphone, click of a computer mouse or touch of a tablet screen.

MasterCard said Monday it plans to make PayPass Wallet Services available in the third quarter, initially in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom and Australia. It intends to expand the service to the point of sale over time and provide additional services such as at-a-glance account information before making a purchase; spending controls and immediate alerts; and delivery of targeted offers, coupons and loyalty programs.

American Airlines and Barnes & Noble will be among the first merchants to incorporate the PayPass Online checkout button on their websites, and American will integrate PayPass Wallet into its mobile application, MasterCard said.

Very interesting. A wallet service like this is a great development for merchants and banks that want to enable customers to integrate their smart devices with expanding personal finance services. The final piece in the jigsaw for widespread adoption of such technology has always been consumer confidence, and that can only be gained through robust testing and secure validation of the software behind pioneering services such as MasterCard PayPass. As we get closer to the launch date for this service, it would be really interesting to learn more about the Quality Assurance and testing practices related to the services, especially from American Airlines regarding its mobile application. There are sure to be many other companies following this route, and they'll be keen to hear about the testing processes American decided to adopt.
