USAA, which has long been known for adopting newer delivery channels faster than other financial services firms, announced Wednesday that more than 5.2 million members had downloaded its mobile apps for iPhone, Android and iPad by 2012's end. That compares to 3.3 million downloads at 2011's end.

USAA offers insurance, banking, investment and retirement products and services to more than 9.4 million members of the U.S. military and their families.

"This year we'll continue to roll out new mobile tools to make our members' lives easier," said Neff Hudson, assistant vice president of emerging channels, in a release.

Deposit@Mobile 3.0, which allows members to use imaging capabilities to deposit up to 10 checks into multiple accounts at one time on iPads, will come soon to iPhone and Android, said Hudson. USAA plans to launch its its virtual mobile assistant — its Siri-like voice activated banking app — in early spring.

Beyond standard features like check account balance, USAA's mobile banking offerings include the ability to apply for life insurance and open a new deposit account.
