Wells Fargo to Debut Two Small Branches in D.C.

Wells Fargo & Company is opening two techier smaller branches in the D.C. area.

Both new locations — one an in-store bank within Safeway — will equip the banks' team members with tablets to serve customers throughout the real estate. The new stores will also include Wells' more advanced ATMs that dispense $1 and $5 bills.

The new branch concepts come on the heels of the bank first launching its neighborhood store prototype (sans tellers windows) about a year ago in Washington D.C.

Wells Fargo's traditional stores clock in around 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. The bank's latest neighborhood store is about 2,000 square feet while the in-store unit is 350 square feet.

Banks across the nation are testing out smaller branches as foot traffic declines year after year and customers gravitate toward digital alternatives.
