Internet, Mobile Payments Deemed Difficult to Secure

Though the payments industry continues to focus on protecting cardholder data at the point of sale, securing online or mobile payments also will need to be scrutinized, Robert Carr, CEO of Heartland Payment Systems Inc., told CardLine sister publication ATM&Debit News at the ATM, Debit & Prepaid Forum hosted by SourceMedia Inc. in Las Vegas this week.

Protecting those kind of payments is an issue, but "it's a really hard problem to solve because there is not a PIN-type of end-to-end encryption solution out there to copy, which is what we're working on now," Carr said.

The industry is right to target card-present transactions because the data on the card are the most important. "But there is another problem to be solved [in Internet and mobile payments]," he adds.
