Former BB&T Chief Allison to Run Capitalism Program in N.C.

John A. Allison, former chairman and chief executive at BB&T in Winston-Salem, N.C., has returned to academia.

Allison was recently named executive in residence for the BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism, which operates as part of Wake Forest University's School of Business, according to an article in the Winston-Salem Journal.

Allison, who joined the university's program on Nov. 1, retired earlier this year as chairman and CEO of the Cato Institute, a libertarian group.

The new appointment also marks a return to Wake Forest for Allison, who briefly served as a professor at the business school after retiring from BB&T in 2009. He has also written books on leadership and the causes of the financial crisis.

Allison, who led BB&T for two decades, is a follower of Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism. BB&T, as a result, has sponsored the creation of capitalism study centers at colleges and universities.
