First National Bank Alaska (FBAK) in Anchorage has picked a 39-year veteran of the bank as its new president.

Betsy Lawer became president on May 1, the $3 billion-asset company said Monday. She also will retain her post as vice chairman, First National said in a press. She succeeded D.H. Cuddy, who remains chairman.

Lawer is a third-generation banker at the company, which was founded by her grandfather. She joined the bank in 1974, starting as a secretary, and in her 39 years with the bank has worked in all aspects of management. She was chief operating officer until 2008.
