MainStreet Bank in Fairfax, Va., has tapped a retired football legend to join its board.
The $271 million-asset bank said Thursday that Darrell Green had become a director. Green, who is a member of the National Football League's Hall of Fame, was an initial investor in the bank when it opened in 2004.
A star cornerback who was recognized as one of football's fastest players, Green spent his entire 20-year career with the Washington Redskins. He was named to seven Pro Bowls and earned three Super Bowl rings. He retired in 2002.
"We are excited to have Darrell on the Board. He brings such strong credibility and integrity — two attributes that we hold very dear at MainStreet," Jeff Dick, MainStreet's chairman, president and chief executive, said in a press release. “He is familiar with the management team and several of the directors, so I really see him hitting the ground running."
A number of banks in recent months have tapped sports-related personalities to join their boards. Last year, MidSouth Bancorp (MSL) tapped Jake Delhomme, a veteran pro football player, to join the board of its bank. Berkshire Hills Bancorp (BHLB) appointed Geno Auriemma, the coach of the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team, to its board.
