American Banker | Jun 22For the first time, more than half of all executives surveyed — including more than 91% at large firms — said their companies had an operational risk function. The most commonly cited benefit expected from improvement in this area: avoiding legal or regulatory action. Also: More banks are looking at reputational risk.

American Banker | Feb 16Despite rising interest rates, a weak housing market, and lawmakers pounding the table about increased regulation of home lending, financial companies are still looking at mortgages and home equity lines as their best hope for driving consumer lending growth this year. The latest Executive Forum — American Banker's quarterly online survey — also found that relatively few financial services firms are actively looking for new customers among the unbanked and underbanked.

Executives also plan to increase hiring, but say they are frustrated with the difficulty of finding qualified employees. The survey found that nearly a third of large-bank executives expect their company to buy another one in the next 12 months.

American Banker | Aug 4More institutions hired chief compliance officers in the last year, according to the latest Executive Forum. The survey covered regulatory and compliance issues and included bankers' ratings of their associations' effectiveness. The survey also found that the number of charter changes fell. And once again, a majority offered no opinion on whether the Basel rules need revision.

Operational Risk: Who's Making Progress
American Banker | May 5More big financial firms have hired chief risk officers in the last year, according to the latest Financial Services Executive Forum, which focused on operational risk management. Over 80% of the respondents from large companies said they have one, versus 68% last year. But 58% of the smaller companies, up from 45% last year, said they plan to enhance op-risk management.
