About the Bank Benchmark

The Bank Benchmark is an interactive peer comparison service of American Banker, powered by technology from Institutional Risk Analytics, a unit of Lord, Whalen LLC. Exclusively available to American Banker subscribers, The Bank Benchmark compares institutions to peers using performance and risk measures relevant to bankers, regulators, and investors.

Bank profiles in The Bank Benchmark service can be viewed individually, in user-configured peer groups, or in pre-set peer groups of the 25 closest institutions by assets. Personal watch lists may hold up to 20 institutions and can be edited at will. Comparison tables and profiles in the service can be viewed online or exported to Excel.

Metrics include Return on Assets and Equity, business model indicators such as Efficiency and Net Interest/Gross Non-Interest Income ratios, historical EPS and corporate data for publicly listed institutions provided by Hemscott, and Basel II credit risk measures such as Defaults and Loss Given Default. Data is primarily sourced from “as filed” regulatory financial statement data and is aggregated to the holding company level when possible.

The performance and risk measures displayed in The Bank Benchmark are selected from the IRA Bank Monitor, a unique performance and risk analytics model of all FDIC-insured depository institutions, including a variety of financial tests, Basel II credit ratings and risk metrics. The IRA Bank Monitor includes Economic Capital benchmarks for all US banks, including empirical risk factors for trading, investing, and lending activities, and is available via subscription or for purchase in a custom implementation.
