3Q '09 Bank Earnings

With the financial meltdown a year in the past, the dominant questions about third-quarter performance start with "are we" and "have we." Are we seeing credit quality indicators, such as nonperforming loan and reserve levels, peak? Have we left the worst of the recession? Are we seeing a rapid or steady deterioration in commercial real estate credits? Have we seen where growth for next year might occur? Ultimately, questioners are trying to determine whether and how far along banking companies are on the path between the calamitous past and a better — but still remote — future.
