Michael Cooney concentrates on matters related to nonprofit and educational organizations and their corporate governance, fundraising, state regulation, and taxation.Mr. Cooneys practice includes clients such as private colleges and universities, hospitals and health care systems, social clubs, trade associations, private foundations and religious organizations. His work on investing and administering donor-restricted or donor-advised funds is nationally known. He has worked on issues such as tax-exemption and private foundation status, joint ventures both between exempt entities and with for-profit partners, and unrelated business income tax. He has advised clients on corporate governance, from the creation of the corporate entity to its dissolution. In addition, he has experience in fundraising and planned giving matters for non-profit institutions.Mr. Cooney is a member of the American, New York State, and Florida bar associations and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He is the former chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, and chairperson of the Board of Directors of the World Childhood Foundation.
