12-Step Program To Home Ownership
U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL) joined South Side Community FCU here in introducing a free "12 Steps to Homeownership" course that also provides three additional benefits to everyone who completes the nine-week session: one hour of college credit through the City Colleges of Chicago; a free credit report, and free one-on-one homeownership counseling.
The National CU Foundation is helping to underwrite the program through its latest $701,383 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support homeownership counseling.
The foundation reported that South Side Community FCU has made a commitment to provide educational and financial resources to African-American homebuyers. The credit union has worked with the NCUF throughout every year of its HUD program, which is now in its third year. As part of last year's HUD grant through NCUF to SSCFCU, most of the consumers receiving conseling were from the nation's lowest income levels-below 50%-80% of area median income. According to South Side Community FCU, the new 12-step course is designed so potential homebuyers can attend after work or on weekends.
