NEW YORK - (09/01/04) – Hundreds of Republican Partyfaithful munched seafood in one room, New York lox and bagels inanother, Italian pasta in another, and Chinese food in yet anotherof the elegant Tavern on the Green Tuesday night in a creditunion-sponsored reception for Gov. George Pataki and Rep. TomReynolds, chairman of the Republican Congressional CampaignCommittee. The famous restaurant was probably the most popularvenue during this week’s Bacchanalian feast that doubled asthe GOP convention, hosting four events Tuesday and more than 15for the week. The event, overlooking the western corner of CentralPark, was co-sponsored by CUNA and the New York CU League to showtheir support of Reynolds’ efforts to maintain aRepublican-controlled House, and Pataki, who has been pushing forcredit unions’ involvement in the state’s multi-milliondollar Excelsior Link Program, which makes no-interest deposits inbanks for community development lending. “TheGovernor’s been very supportive of us on this,” BillMellin, president of the New York league, told The Credit UnionJournal. Pataki is scheduled to address the Convention Thursdaynight and introduce President Bush.
