NEW YORK - (08/31/04) – Corporate credit unionrepresentatives were making the rounds at the Republican NationalConvention to search out potential legislative partners. Officialswith the Association of Corporate CUs met over the past two dayswith representatives of the National Federation of Businesses, theNational Association of Realtors, the Competitive EnterpriseInstitute, and the American Hospital Association, all of which haveone or two interests in common, according to Michael Canning, executive director of the corporates groups. Groups like thehospital association, which represents non-profit hospitals, arebeing targeted for potential taxation, so could be potential alliesfor credit unions, he noted. The Realtors, he added, are at oddswith the banks, so could be potential allies in certain otherareas. “Increasingly, larger issues are affecting so manydifferent groups; and those groups are banding together to try toinfluence legislation,” Canning told The Credit UnionJournal.
