CU-Backed Candidate In Texas Fighting For Seat

Former Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar continued to lead Rep. Ciro Rodriguez in their race for the state's District 28 House seat after the second recount in the race. The second recount trimmed Cuellar's lead from 203 votes to just 58, giving Rodriguez, the credit union-backed candidate, a last breath.

The narrowed difference between the two Hispanic candidates gives some hope to Rodriguez heading into last week's court challenge of the vote. Rodriguez, elected in 1998 with strong credit union support, claims as many as 400 Cuellar votes were cast illegally in the March primary and should be disqualified. Whoever wins the nomination is favored to win November's election.
