SAN FRANCISCO - (09/27/05) - Dick Ensweiler, the president of theTexas CU League, ended his two-year term as CUNA Chairman Monday byacknowledging the outpouring of relief, both financial andphysical, donated by credit unions to the hundreds of thousands ofvictims of Hurricane Katrina. "Credit unions truly showed theirtrue nature, that of people helping people,'" during the biggestnatural disaster to hit America, said Ensweiler, the first leaguepresident to serve as CUNA Chairman. Ensweiler, who officiallyhanded the chairman's gavel over to Yuri Valdov, president ofNorthwest FCU during the trade association's annual meeting, notedthe vast relief efforts by credit unions around the nation, andparticularly in his home state, where an estimated 250,000 victimsof the massive storm were evacuated in the days followingKatrina.
