HARTFORD, Ct. - (07/26/06) -- CUNA stepped into the fray to helprescue Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who is runningneck-and-neck in next week's Democratic Primary with localmillionaire Ned Lamont. The credit union group reported Monday thatit is spending $29,100 for an independent mailing on behalf ofLieberman, a long-time credit union supporter, who endorsed HR1151, the CU Membership Access Act, as well as the creditunion-backed bankruptcy reform bill. "He's always been there for usand was available whenever we needed to talk to him," Richard Gose,CUNA's political director, told The Credit Union Journal. CUNA hasalso contributed $5,000 to Lieberman's campaign. Under independentexpenditures, an interest group may provide campaign support onbehalf of a candidate but the support may not be coordinated withthat candidate. The three-term Senator is under attack in his homestate for his support of President Bush's war in Iraq, which hisopponent, Lamont, opposes.
