Feds Chase New Identity Theft Scheme

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Hundreds of customers at Dollar Tree discount stores have reported funds being stolen from their credit union and bank accounts in recent weeks by unauthorized ATM withdrawals, authorities said. At least 30 members of the Golden 1 CU have reported unauthorized access to their accounts after they were shopping at one of the chain's stores in the area. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating claims from customers at Dollar Tree stories in Carmichael, Modesto and Ashland, Ore., a representative of the agency told The Credit Union Journal Tuesday. The Secret Service and local police are exploring whether data was intercepted on a wireless laptop computer in the stores' parking lots, then used to produce ATM cards on unsuspecting shoppers.
