Firefighters Among Those Honored

The California league recognized several people and organizations at its annual meeting here last week, including firefighters killed and injured in the blazes in this state.

Former CUNA Chairman Barry Jolette, president of San Mateo Credit Union in Redwood City, received the President's Award. The award recognized Jolette for his work while leading CUNA.

Two firefighters from the Novato Fire District were honored for their efforts in the state's recent wildfires. The league donated what it called a "significant amount" to the memorial fund of Steve Rucker, 38, who died battling a wildfire near San Diego, and a fund for firefighter Doug McDonald, who sustained burns over 27% of his body while fighting the fire near Julian. In addition, the league and the California League Services Corp. also established a $10,000 post-secondary scholarship fund, to be administered by the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, for firefighters and their dependents who are members of a credit union in California or Nevada.

Finally, Liberty Enterprises was recognized by the league's political action committee as Supplier Advocate of the Year, which awards ongoing support of California credit union issues and causes. Liberty recently donated $10,000 to the California Wildfires Fund established by the National CU Foundation.
