Health Insurance For Small CUs

Wisconsin Credit Union League Services Corp. has teamed up with CUNA Mutual Group and Wisconsin Health Alliance to help credit unions with small staffs get health insurance coverage.

"In Wisconsin, there are 41 credit unions that have either one or two people looking for insurance but don't fall into the normal realm of insurance services," said Jeremy Yardley, Product & Service Manager at WCUL. For example, participation in CUNA Mutual's existing health insurance plan requires at least three employees.

Yardley said LSC staff did a search and found that WHA was willing to serve the industry's smaller operations. Since announcing the partnership in late February, officials from 13 credit unions called for more information, he said.

"What Wisconsin Health Alliance does in conjunction with Nationwide Benefit Plans is provide small group insurance coverage," he said. "We work as the contact person and the liaison between the two."

WHA employs 25 insurance agents across the state and represents more than 1,100 individual and family policyholders through a wide variety of top-rated companies. Among them are American Medical Security, Assurant Health, Golden Rule and continental General Insurance Company.

Participating CU employees are individually underwritten by WHA and cannot be singled out for rate increases or cancellation.
