House Leader Rallies Pro-BankruptcyReform Lobby

WASHINGTON - (03/23/05) -- A key congressional sponsor of thebankruptcy reform bill called on major backers of the bill,including the credit union lobby, to buck up support for themeasure during Congresses Easter Recess, before the full Housecomes back to vote on the bill. In a closed-door meeting in hisoffice last Thursday, the day after the House Judiciary Committeeapproved the credit union-backed bill, Judiciary Chairman JamesSensenbrenner, R-Wis., the bill's lead sponsor, urged participantsto get members and other to their contact their congressionalrepresentatives over the coming weeks to buck up support for thebill and eliminate the chance of a floor fight when the bill isvoted April 7. Sources told The Credit Union Journal thatrepresentatives of the 12 groups that organized the originalConsumer Bankruptcy Coalition, including CUNA, were in theinvitation-only meeting, as well a representative from NAFCU. TheHouse is widely expected to vote final passage of the same billapproved by the Senate two weeks ago, then send the bill on forPresident Bush to sign into law.
