Mica Praises 'Access' Plan, Offers To Provide Help

CUNA said it is offering its support to the "Access Across America" program being championed by NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar. CUNA said that support will include assisting in the promotion of the program and serving as a clearinghouse of information about the program-and its successes-within the credit union community.

"Like you, I believe more can and should be done to embrace Access Across America," CUNA President Dan Mica told Dollar in a letter sent to the chairman. "I believe this is a visionary program that is fully consistent with the tradition of the credit union system to provide service to individuals from all segments of the economy, including low- income persons."

Mica asked that Dollar participate in a conference call in the near future with its board, league presidents, and other groups to emphasize the "significance of the program and address any questions."

Separately, Mica urged NCUA to consider adopting an "ombudsman" program similar to that of the FDIC.
